Our seed exchange is a sort of bank, for seeds. Participants will make a deposit of seeds they've saved which allows them to make a withdrawal of saved seeds held by the bank and contributed by other participants. A list of contributors as well as lists of seed categories will be maintained on this site, and categories will include, but not be limited to, the following: Perennial - Annual - Fruit - Vegetable - Flower - Specialty - Heirloom - Hybrid. Acceptance of seed will be limited to those contained within a sealed, labeled container. Label information should include identifying nomenclature such as seed type, name (scientific where possible), date saved and name of saver.

The Natural Way

Nature is perfect in her imperfections and natural selection is enhanced by continuous and considerable mutations to the gene pool. What this means is when dealing with nature one should rely on continuity but expect the occasional aberration, and when it occurs view it as a natural occurrence and not a mistake.

Seeds are truly a wondrous invention of nature, they are living plants, at rest, in an embryonic state.

For the beginner

Seed saving can be as easy as 1, 2, 3, and you may find the following information helpful.

  1. Seeds can be gathered at anytime during the growing season but it's best to allow them to mature until tapping the seed head will cause them to drop. Or, in the case of fruit, allow the fruit to ripen.
  2. When dislodging seed from a seed head it's helpful to do so over a clean white paper which makes identification easier and aids in separating seed from chaff. When removing seed from fruit it's a good idea to do so within a shallow pan, removing debris then placing seeds individually on an acceptable drying medium (paper, towel, plate).
  3. When seed is thoroughly dry (this may take a couple weeks) place in an envelope, or other appropriate receptacle, noting on the container the type of seed and date then store in a cool dry place away from sunlight.
